Volunteering is good for the soul — no ifs, ands or buts about it! Taking time to help others is fulfilling, rewarding and can be particularly enjoyable when you are immersing yourself in a new community while studying abroad. You can develop an understanding of the current issues impacting the town, city or country and truly make a difference in changing people’s lives. Whether you’re overseas for three weeks or three months, connecting with others and strengthening the community that you’re now a part of is a very good thing.

Here are a few ideas about how you can get involved in volunteering while studying abroad:

  1. Teach English to young children
  2. Volunteer at a local hospital
  3. Get involved with the elderly
  4. Assist the local homeless population
  5. Take part in sports and activities at local community centers

Have you ever spent time volunteering while studying abroad? We’d love to hear about your experience and what it meant to you.
