Festa Junina

Yesterday we celebrated Festa Junina or Festa de São João, a Brazilian festival that commemorates the nativity of St. John the Baptist.  Men and women wear straw hats and other costumes  and jump over fire- I decided to abstain from wearing a straw hat, because I’m a good for nothing sour-puss. Hot wine and cachaça are served along with various traditional foods (I personally didn’t care for).

One tradition I loved was that a woman with braided hair comes around with a basket and you write a love note to someone you admire. You don’t say who it’s from, which is part of what makes it so elegant. I wrote the following note in Portiguese to an Argentinian girl from another class… yeah… I’ve got skills.
