We have many students with Italian heritage who go to Italy, but not too many students with Czech heritage who go to Prague! Anna studied abroad with us in the Czech Republic last spring and had an amazing experience. Read about her experience visiting family in the countryside:
I decided to study abroad in the Czech Republic because my great grandmother immigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia in the early 1900’s. Although she came to America, her four brothers remained in Kyjov. Instead of going to America, her brothers decided to buy a patch of land on a hill for a small vineyard.
The men in the picture are my great grandmother’s brother’s grandson and his son. Now they take care of the vineyard and make the wine. They reuse other bottles because it’s a small family operation– that is why the foil on the bottle is much fancier than they can afford! They only make about 200 bottles every year to drink with friends and family. My mom visited me in Prague and we traveled to Kyjov for the weekend to meet and stay with this part of our family. It was by far the best experience abroad I have had and I am very proud of my decision to come to Prague to study abroad and honor my family history.
