Bryce studied abroad with us in Barcelona, and when he came back he teamed up with AJ to make a film about his time abroad. They screened their film, #abroadperspective, at Howard University and afterward a panel of students who had gone abroad answered questions and discussed their experience.
We asked them both a few questions about what they learned during the process:
Why study abroad?
Bryce: I decided to study abroad because I wanted to do something different. For the majority of my life I have stayed in the same country around the same group of people; this was an opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and experience something new.
Why film so much of your time there?
Bryce: I decided to document my time there because I wanted to show people what it’s like to study abroad. Prior to going, I found myself frequently wondering what the experience would be like. It was at that moment I realized something needed to be done; this was the birth of #AbroadPerspective.
What was your most memorable experience abroad?
Bryce: My most memorable experience was staying with a host family. The time I spent with my host mother and father reinforced the importance of family. In the United States, we often find ourselves caught up in the glitz and glamour of society. And so unfortunately, we tend to lose sight of what matters most, i.e., family and
How much footage did you have to go through?
AJ: Bryce had an extensive collection of footage from his time abroad. There was footage from Barcelona, different places in Spain, Morocco; London and footage that I personally went back and shot. All together there was roughly 25GB of footage to go through. The editing process allowed me to observe Bryce’s journey, which I found very captivating.
Because I never studied abroad, I directed the film from the perspective of a prospective student who was interested in seeing what it’s like abroad before actually making the leap. I made sure to include the questions that I faced when looking into the study abroad process.
Why did you want to make this film?
AJ: I created this film with two purposes in mind. I wanted Bryce’s experiences to be seen by the masses. You got to truly see how the experience truly affected him. I also created the film for my own personal reasons. I wanted to encourage students who were on the fence about whether to make the journey abroad.
From making this film I truly learned about the study abroad experience. One of the most noticeable things that I saw throughout the film was the sincerity. The people came from every walk of life, and each had an interesting story to tell. I also learned cinematographic and photography techniques, which will help me to perfect my craft.
Why did you choose the title? What is an #abroadperspective?
AJ: Bryce introduced the idea to me from the very beginning of the process and I instantly found it fitting for the documentary.
An #abroadperspective is the perspective that one develops from being exposed to a new way of life. The title is symbolic of the growth of your outlook on life
once you have been abroad.
