Internships are a fantastic way to prepare for a professional career—and garner valuable contacts and experience. Plus, adding international skills and work history to your CV through an overseas internship is an excellent way to set yourself apart from your competition in pursuit of the career of your dreams.
If you are considering college internships abroad, the following interview with Molly Sweeny about studying abroad in England with an internship should be very helpful as you prepare for your own academic and professional future:
Where do you study in the U.S. and why did you choose to come to London to do an internship?
I study at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. I came to London to do an internship because studying abroad is something I had always wanted to do, and when I realized the timing would work to intern here, it was the best way to achieve my goal.
What new skills did you gain or develop during your internship?
The amount of confidence I found within me is the most notable skill that I developed during the internship.
How will these skills be useful to you in your future career?
I know that I’m now confident to pick up the phone and call anyone. I’m confident in trying new things and not giving up when things don’t go as planned, which is something I will use when applying for jobs this spring.
Did you learn anything new about yourself during your internship? If so, what?
Again, the confidence and courage of trying something new and the determination not to give up.
What advice would you give to any student considering doing an internship?
Take the risk; you’ll meet some of your best friends in the internship program, and even if things don’t always go as planned, you will learn so much about yourself, and the amount of self-growth that you will do makes it worth it.
