Bonjour from sunny Paris!
It’s been a fabulous start to our AIFS Customized Faculty-Led study abroad Fall Semester in Paris. Welcome North Orange County Community College District students!
Last week, our study abroad in Paris cultural calendar officially started with a visit to the Louvre Museum.
The Louvre Museum is the world’s largest art museum. Firstly, students were shown around the museum by two wonderful guides. They explained the medieval foundation of this grand palace. Students also discovered that this former royal chateau was a very essential defensive fortress against the Vikings!
We admired the highlights of the Museum such as the Statue of Victory, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Veronese’s The Wedding Feast at Cana and the masterpieces for Raphael. Many students made sure to grab selfies with the the Apollo Sauroctonus – original ‘selfie statue’.
The Royal Palace
The visit was also an opportunity to admire the architecture of the Royal Palace; it was once the biggest building in the world! Furthermore, there are up to 380,000 works of art in its collection. It is said that you can spend up to three months to see every single piece in this museum. However, our students spent four hours there. But I’m sure they will be going back and making the most of the late night museum openings – the Louvre is open until 10.00pm on Wednesdays!
It was also a big week for the symbol of Paris – the Eiffel Tower. On Wednesday, the tower lit up in pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness month. On Thursday, the monument celebrated its 300 million visitors and transformed itself into Paris’ biggest music venue with a DJ spinning the night away on the first floor. And you bet, many of our students were there.
