I’ve been dreaming of studying abroad since I started researching colleges in high school. Attending a university that had a good study abroad program was very important to me in deciding where to go. I was even more thrilled to learn that Temple University, my home institution, had a program in London! This was appealing to me as my first impressions of London were that it has a rich history and a great theatre presence. As a theatre major this really stood out to me!
About three weeks ago, along with a packed suitcase and my newly acquired passport in hand, I boarded a flight to London. Upon arriving, I was beyond thrilled to actually be here! They say studying abroad changes you, and I’ve already begun to understand how true that is.
I have had a pretty easy time adjusting to life here. In our British Life & Culture class, we discussed culture shock and the different phases one goes through. Based on that, I believe I’m currently still in the “honeymoon” phase. This is because I’m still falling in love with the city and finding the good in everything here. Also, even as I walk to class, I still find myself looking up and around at all of the things around me. I continue to take in the sights and sounds of London because I still feel like there is so much to explore.
So far, my favorite thing about London has been the FOOD! For example, today I got the best brunch with some friends!I’m such a foodie, so I’ve been so excited getting to try all the food here! There are so many cute cafes to check out and food markets that I see when walking around the city. I’m shocked about how much of a variety of food types there are here. My home town has one diner, one Applebee’s, and about a million pizza shops, so this is a major upgrade for me! I still haven’t had the iconic fish & chips dish yet, but I’m planning to get that asap from the pub right near our apartments! Overall, I’d give London a 10/10 so far!
