For anyone interested in studying abroad in a Central European country with a fascinating history and culture, Hungary is an ideal option. Its capital, Budapest, perfectly captures the country’s character—once the seat of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the city remains a hub for world-class art and architecture, making it an excellent place to experience all Hungary has to offer. AIFS Abroad offers several study abroad programs in Budapest at the renowned Corvinus University of Budapest. If you’re interested in having a unique study abroad experience that truly stands out, Budapest is an unbeatable option. Want to learn what it’s really like to study abroad in Hungary?
Hear from two college students who studied abroad in Hungary with AIFS Abroad!
Christian: Fall in Budapest
Meet Christian from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, who studied abroad in Budapest during the fall semester of his junior year. Hear Christian explain why he thinks everyone should choose to study abroad in Budapest:
“Everywhere I go in [Budapest], there’s always something new to discover… [It’s] impossible not to fall in love with this city… I love absolutely everything about Budapest. It’s beautiful, it’s fun, there’s so much to do, the people are amazing… there’s no reason not to have a good time. I cannot stress enough: you need to come study abroad here, this is the best place to go, I promise that.”
Curious about what Hungarian food is like? Christian explains that not only does he love the local flavors, but the cost is hard to beat:

“One of my favorite things about living here in Budapest is how cheap the food is, I’ve had breakfast here for 50 cents to a dollar every single day. It’s gotten to the point where eating out is the same price or less as cooking at home.”
In addition to affordable and delicious food options, Hungary is also an excellent choice for anyone who wants access to cost-effective travel throughout Europe, thanks to its central location:
“[It’s] incredibly easy to travel out of Hungary. It’s so central that flights and trains are extremely cheap… Every weekend I’ve been here, I have gone to a different country.”
During his study abroad program in Budapest, Christian traveled to Rome, Munich, London, Prague, the Amalfi Coast, and Naples—and his flight from Budapest to Naples, Italy, only cost him $30!
Interested in what the housing in Budapest is like with AIFS Abroad? Christian stayed in a student residence on campus, which he describes below:
“It’s a great spot for international students and very well located!… [Our student residence has] 4 individual rooms, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen with a dining table. The rooms themselves are really comfortable. They’re very spacious and have plenty of storage space… I personally have a 4-person 2-bathroom style because I came with some friends from home, so they put us in a 4-person apartment. But some of the other friends I have in the AIFS program have two-person rooms, and I think if you pay extra, you can also get an individual room.”
As someone studying marketing, Christian mainly took classes related to his major. As he explains, there are tons of courses you can enroll in at Corvinus University, an AACSB-accredited institution, with AIFS Abroad:
“There are so many different classes at Corvinus where you can fit into any major [and] minor that you want. And all those classes are listed on the AIFS Abroad website, so you can see what transfers to your home university and how it transfers and things like that.”
Jolie: Spring in Budapest
Jolie, a business and psychology major from the University of Pittsburgh, studied abroad in Budapest during spring semester. Hear Jolie explain some of the benefits of studying abroad in Budapest and why she chose this program destination:
“I chose Budapest because I wanted something different than the typical study abroad hotspots! I’d heard only good things when I asked around about Budapest, and I can completely confirm those after being there for a semester. I would absolutely recommend it! It’s a good city to be on a budget in, a bit of a hidden gem, and filled with so many things to do and places to see!”
She attended Corvinus University of Budapest, a well-regarded academic institution that is especially advantageous for business majors like Jolie, thanks to its AACSB and AMBA accreditations. Below, Jolie describes her experience at Corvinus University and how her classes abroad compared to her home university:

“The location [of Cornivus University] is perfect, towards the center of the city, right on the Danube. There is a wide range of classes to choose from… My classes at Corvinus were very interactive, collaborative, and hands-on… While I have had some classes like this at [the University of Pittsburgh], the majority of my lectures are simply just teachers lecturing, exams & homework assignments! So, these classes at Corvinus were a bit of an adjustment, going from individual work to more collaborative work, and much more often than at home.”
While the academic experience is a major component of every AIFS Abroad study abroad program, they’re not all about school. Our programs include immersive cultural activities, as well as trips and excursions that take you around your host city and country, helping you learn more about your host country and its culture. One of the AIFS Abroad excursions Jolie attended was to Hungary’s breathtaking Lake Balaton:
“My favorite excursion was our Lake Balaton trip! We went in May, so the weather was beautiful, and the lake itself is stunning. We had a guide the entire weekend, who was super kind and very knowledgeable about the area! We went on a bike tour for a good portion of the day, did a few hikes, swam in the lake, and spent time with the people in our program.”
