If you are a soon-to-be AIFS student, you’ve probably noticed a “flight package” which takes you to London for a couple of days before your final study abroad destination. So, should you do it or not? Well, take a look at the benefits below and you can decide for yourself.
- You get to explore a new city before settling in to your new home away from home. For me, my study abroad location was Rome, Italy. Having integrated myself into the English culture helped create a smoother transition for me to do so with the Roman way of life. My eyes were opened and my egocentrism diminished, allowing me to set aside my American pride and accept the new environment around me.
- You get a little help from AIFS advisors and staff on site to guide you through the adventure of a new country. Traveling with AIFS took the stress away. Not having to worry about delayed flights or getting to and from the airport was a major weight off my shoulders. Having your travel plans taken care of gives you the time to focus on what’s important, soaking up your new environment!
- Lastly and most importantly, it gives you a chance to meet the people you’ll be sharing your abroad experience with… other students! If you are like me and knew no one going into the program the few days in London were great to form friendships and get to know everyone before the bustle of settling into your new city and home. I instantly made friends, and we have stuck together since!
You may feel a little jet lagged getting off of the plane, but get up and go explore the Queen’s land! A cup of coffee and pure curiosity can go a long way. Take a walk through Hyde Park, visit Buckingham Palace, and enjoy a traditional beverage at a local English pub. You’ll be even more excited for the rest of your abroad experience.
